New Place - The house that stood here was built c1497 by Hugh Clopton for his own use, it was purchased by William Shakespeare in 1597, and it is also the place where he died in 1616. The house and large gardens were left to his daughter Susanna and her husband John. The house was demolished in 1759, apparently because the Rev Francis Gastrell (the then current owner) was in dispute with the local authorities over taxes. It is also said that his wife had upset locals and tourists three years earlier by cutting down a mulberry tree in the garden because she was annoyed with the amount of tourists peering at it, the Reverend and his wife later moved to Lichfield. This part of the garden has been redesigned since an archaeological dig in 2015. Image Date: 05/03/2010
